Crews attended a blaze near a Tesco store in Cornwall on Wednesday afternoon, August 12, as another fire broke out. The fire involved a hedgerow behind the Tesco store in Wadebridge. The store was evacuated as a precaution, and nobody is believed to have been injured.
Pictures from the scene showed fire crews in attendance as white smoke filled the sky. Several witnesses reported "a large fire" in the area. One person said: "Just popped in to Tesco lots of smoke on waste land adjacent to it. Smoke blowing over Tesco carpark." Another said: "Large wildfire behind Tesco . Tesco emptying out and roads blocking."
Wadebridge Community Fire Station said: "We have attended an incident involving a hedge row on fire behind the Tesco Superstore in Wadebridge. The store was evacuated as a precaution and there are no reported injuries. The fire is now out and all fire service resources have left the scene."
A Tesco spokesperson said: "Our Wadebridge Superstore is open as usual following a brief closure earlier today. We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused."
The fire comes as an amber heat health alert is in place for the South West until Friday, August 14, at 9pm, as the UK enters its fifth heatwave of the year. In Cornwall, temperatures are expected to reach a high of 31C in Bude today, August 12, before dropping to 27C on Thursday and 22C on Friday.
