Theo Cunningham, 15, from Fowey, is in hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries in a motocross crash. He was thrown from his bike during a race last week and taken to Bristol Children's Hospital, where his parents are by his bedside.
A fundraiser has been launched by his auntie, Lindsey Bailey-Lewis, to help the family. She says they have been overwhelmed by support from the motocross community and members of the public.
Theo, in his GCSE year at Fowey River Academy, has a long road to recovery. He could not speak for several days, and a brain scan revealed some damage. Doctors have told his mum and dad that he might be in hospital for months.
His dad, Tom Cunningham, has given an update from hospital. Theo has started communicating verbally after initially only being able to squeeze hands. Tom says Theo "is awake but still very unwell."
"Theo does have damage in his brain to what extent the lasting damage will be again this remains to be seen because this really can only be assessed upon his recovery in time."
Waiting for the results of the MRI was the "longest wait ever", says Tom.
"For the most part his scan we were told was really good. Among his injuries, he has no ability to use his left arm, we have been told the part of the brain damaged can affect this or it could still be down to nerve damage. We still await again to see what happens.
"All we can do now is continue to be here for him, he is getting stronger day by day, but I need to stress how unwell he really is still. From our end we stood by his bedside whilst a machine breathed for him and now he is awake and mobile with assistance. He is heavily reliant on us for all his needs. Theo will get every piece of us going forward to get him stronger."
He thanked all those who have given their support, including paramedics and "amazing" hospital staff.
"This process isn't quick, which is something we are adapting to, especially under the circumstances, you just want answers, but there just isn't any definitive ones.
"We are lucky to be where we are with him and still continue to pray for him to get better."
Theo worked odd jobs and saved up to buy his bike. The accident happened during a race at Landrake on Sunday, August 29. He somersaulted through the air three times and landed 20m from where he started.
His parents, Tom and Claire, initially feared the worst as he was unresponsive and bleeding. He had been wearing a helmet but it was ripped off by the bike during the crash.
The race was immediately stopped. The air ambulance landed nearby and paramedics stabilised him before the transfer to hospital.
The GoFundMe page has so far raised £7,710 from more than 250 donations. Lindsey would like to reach the target of £9,000. Neither parent can earn money while they are spending time at their son's bedside, so help is needed to share the financial burden.
She visited Theo in hospital and he responded by squeezing her hand five times when she said how much she loved him. Lindsey added: "I've already seen the pressure, stresses and strains and want to do whatever I can to help.
"The road ahead will be long and Tom and Claire will remain by Theo’s side for as long as it takes."
