Unresolved Mystery: Search Continues for Newquay Woman Believed to Have Taken Her Own Life

The search for Tara Norveil, a 52-year-old woman from Newquay, continues after her body was never recovered following her disappearance in March 2024. An inquest has concluded that it is highly probable she took her own life, citing deteriorating mental and physical health as contributing factors. Despite extensive multi-agency searches, no trace of Ms. Norveil has been found.

Circumstances of Disappearance

Ms. Norveil, who moved to Newquay from London a few years prior, was last seen on CCTV on March 14, 2024. She was wearing a hat and carrying a water bottle, items later discovered on Pentire headland, a location with significant sentimental value to her. A week after she was reported missing, a comprehensive search operation involving police, coastguard teams, RNLI lifeboats, a drone unit, and the coastguard helicopter was launched. Despite these efforts, her body was never recovered.

Inquest Findings

The inquest, held in Truro, heard that Ms. Norveil had been experiencing significant mental and emotional distress following the deaths of her mother and beloved pets, alongside a decline in her physical health. A note explaining her decision, along with her keys and wallet, were found in a prominent place within her home. Police described Ms. Norveil as a strong-willed individual who, if she felt her health was deteriorating beyond her control, would take decisive action to regain control.

A friend testified that Ms. Norveil was resolute in her decisions and believed she had chosen to end her life due to her declining health. The Assistant Coroner for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Guy Davies, stated that all evidence pointed towards suicide, concluding that it was more likely than not that Ms. Norveil had passed away. The investigation found no suspicious circumstances or involvement of a third party in her disappearance.
