Truro City drew 1-1 with Merthyr Town at Penydarren Park in the FA Cup second qualifying round. Defender Tom Harrison scored in the dying moments to force a replay, which will be played on Tuesday in Cornwall.
Manager John Askey felt his side should have won and rued their missed chances.
“Again, we’ve played really well, created a lot of chances and not taken them. A game that we should have won. Under the circumstances, I suppose with seconds to go, we are out of the cup, but the players have kept going and we are still in there.”
“It’s a great opportunity on Tuesday to get into the next round.”
Just after the 80th minute, the home side took the lead. Kane Simpson sent a teasing ball into the box and Ellis Watts diverted it past Aiden Stone in the Tinners’ goal.
With the game looking bleak, Harrison arrived at the back post to save a draw for Truro. It was a cracking finish from the centre-back, truly in the dying embers of the match.
That last-minute goal provides a huge boost for the Cornish side, especially with the replay coming so soon on Tuesday.
“It’s a shame it’s taken a centre-half to strike the ball like that,” Askey said.
“Because we had a lot of chances, it’s the only thing I can pick fault with, but the endeavour, some of the play and the chances we created were really good, but I was really pleased.”
“Tom (Harrison), again, you always know what you are going to get. You are always going to get 100%. It was nice to see him strike the ball like that. I think it is what we deserved.”
The number of supporters who travelled to Wales on the day shows how much a good FA Cup run means to the club and its fans.
“I was really pleased for the supporters. Again, they travelled in their numbers. I think they would be pleased with the performance, pleased that the players kept going. Obviously, we are happy for them, that we have gone away and we are still in the hat,” Askey added.
