Sonny Blu Lo-Everton scored a captain’s hat-trick as Torquay United beat AFC Stoneham 6-1 in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup this afternoon.
The match turned out to be comfortable for Torquay. By the time Lo-Everton, wearing the captain’s armband, scored his third goal, the score was already 5-1 and the result was beyond doubt.
Torquay led 4-1 at half-time. Lo-Everton scored his first two goals after Callum Morton and Jacob Beaumont-Clark had opened the scoring. Late in the game, substitutes Isaac Westendorf and Cody Cooke combined for the final goal, with Cooke given the goal even though Westendorf might have had the last touch.
New defender Taylor Scarff made his debut. The 26-year-old was signed from Plymouth Parkway on Friday. With Jake Wannell suspended and Oludare Olufunwa injured from the last game, Scarff started life at Torquay alongside Tyler Hill at centre back. Manager Ball made other changes, giving Dan Hayfield, Matt Jay and Morton starts, while Westendorf and Sean Robertson were on the bench.
Scarff took a knock early on and was treated for a cut on his forehead. In the seventh minute, with Scarff back on the pitch, Lo-Everton sent in a low cross to the edge of the box. Morton, unmarked, swept the ball home to make it 1-0.
Beaumont-Clark had a shot easily held by goalkeeper Ross Casey. Scarff needed more treatment in the 15th minute when his head started bleeding again. There might have been a penalty when Tegan Finn was outmuscled and fell in the area while running at goal. In
