Armed response officers were called to an incident in Newquay on Friday afternoon.
Locals reported seeing police vehicles and armed officers in Higher Tower Road at around 3.30pm. Officers appeared to focus on a property near the junction of Crantock Street and Atlantic Road.
Photographs taken by residents suggest a man was detained by armed officers at the scene. Other images from social media show two women being escorted along the street towards a police vehicle, both with their hands cuffed behind their backs.
Earlier images circulating online show two police dog handlers, both wearing balaclavas, with German Shepherd dogs in Higher Tower Road, along with an armed response vehicle on the pavement.
A local resident said police carried out a search of a nearby property and that officers removed a "big dog" from the building. They also claimed armed officers shouted instructions to neighbours to stay away from their windows as the incident unfolded.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Officers, including armed officers, attended an address in Higher Tower Road, Newquay around 1.35pm on Friday 18 September. A man in his 20s was arrested in relation to a suspected firearms offence. He remains in police custody. A police cordon is in place at the scene while enquiries are ongoing."
