Only a few months after its lift and escalator were fixed, the Wharfside Shopping Centre in Penzance has had to shut down its escalator again because it has broken.
In February, the centre announced that its lift and escalator would be repaired by the end of April.
The Wharfside Shopping Centre in Penzance, which has filled with ambitious indie shops and experienced a new lease of life in recent years, has suffered issues with its escalators and lifts for more than a year, causing particular disruption for people who live above the building.
Earlier this year, the seaside mall stressed matters would be resolved in time for the "sunny season".
Now it turns out that after only being up and running for a few weeks, the escalator has stopped again and needs fixing again.
One business owner at the centre told CornwallLive: "Only a few months after being repaired, the escalator repair funded partly from Penzance BID (business improvement district) and the town council has failed its insurance certificate. So once again residents, businesses and shoppers have limited access. The service charge on top of rent is still at an all time high with some businesses having to pay over £1,000 a month towards lifts, escalators."
The shop owner claimed that "businesses are leaving once again".
On its Facebook page, the Wharfside Shopping Centre confirmed that one of its escalators is down, adding that "we’re expecting it to be up and running soon".
