Wellbeing Walks in Cornwall Hailed for Keeping People Active

People say taking part in free wellbeing walks has changed their lives "dramatically".

Active Cornwall runs the walks with Ramblers UK and other local partners across the county, aiming to help people of all ages stay healthy and connected.

Led by trained volunteers and held on coast paths, garden estates and town parks, the walks last from 10 to 90 minutes and are open to all abilities.

Kathryn, who takes part in walks at Heligan Gardens near Mevagissey, said the walks helped lift her spirits when she felt down.

"It has changed my life dramatically, I've built up a really beautiful friendship group," she said.

"We see the animals, we see the plants and every week there is something different going on.

"The people I'm with, they ask how you are – it's just good to talk."

Toni, who also takes part, said the walks gave her a good chance to talk with others.

"I've also just had a knee replacement, so this is helping me along," Toni added.

"I come out and walk, we have a chat and a cup of coffee, getting fresh air and being with human beings."

Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, recently recommended adults aim for about 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, and a brisk walk counts towards that.

Active Cornwall's Rob Harrison said there were obvious physical benefits to getting out but stressed "the social element is massively important" too.

"You could come to walk on your own, but you go away with friends and have that network and community," Harrison said.
