An Exmouth man who was two and a half times over the drink-drive limit has been banned from driving after he drove into a motorist's leg. Jeremy Wassall, 61, of Albion Terrace, Exmouth, pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving without due care and attention on August 9 this year.
Exeter Magistrates' Court heard that at around 7.30pm, Wassall pulled out of a junction without indicating, forcing another driver to take evasive action. The driver followed Wassall towards Exmouth, and Wassall pulled into a layby. The court heard the driver stood in front of Wassall's vehicle to prevent him from leaving, but Wassall continued to drive and struck the other driver's leg.
Officers later located Wassall's vehicle and found him nearby on foot. He told them he had consumed a full bottle of whiskey that day. His breath reading was 88 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.
The court heard Wassall has no previous convictions and made full admissions in a police interview. Representing himself in court, he said: "I am truly sorry for what happened."
Wassall was fined £400 and ordered to pay a £160 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs. He was banned from driving for 22 months.
