Callington Town made it back-to-back 4-0 wins in the South West Peninsula League Premier West on Saturday with a comfortable success at East Cornwall rivals Millbrook.
The Pastymen had seen off another side expected to be in the mix on Wednesday night in Camelford, and produced a dominant display at Jenkins Park.
With a few absentees from midweek, joint managers Simon Riddle and Jay Martin made three changes to the starting line-up and were rewarded as early as the fourth minute. Kieran Prescott’s run was found by Fin Harrison, and Prescott finished neatly into the corner.
Cally enjoyed plenty of the ball on the tricky surface, which, following the morning deluge, was slick on top and hard underneath.
With a strong wind in their favour in the first half, Cally were keen to ensure they made use of it and doubled their lead on 21 minutes. Connor Pritchard’s shot was blocked and fell nicely for Alex Jacob to fire goalwards, as the retreating defender on the line couldn’t keep the ball out.
Millbrook nearly found a way back into the game, getting in following a slight lapse, but Jake Mead-Crebbin was alert to block with his chest.
The home side started the second period far better with the wind in their favour, and forced several corners and throws high into the Cally half, which the visiting defence dealt with well.
Just after the hour mark, they got the always-important three-goal cushion. From sub Huck Enticknap’s corner, Fin Harrison’s turn and mis-hit volley fell for Jacob to head in from close range. Jacob then had a guilt-edged chance for his hat-trick when through one-on-one, but skied the shot.
However, a few minutes later he made no mistake as Cally’s best passing move of the game resulted in their fourth of the afternoon and Jacob’s treble. The ball was worked forward quickly, Harrison laid it off and Jacob finished low into the net.
There was further drama on 85 minutes when Harvey Barrett was adjudged to have been the last man on a challenge and was red-carded. However, although the resulting free-kick was on target, it was straight at Mead-Crebbin.
Cally played out the rest of the game with little issues as they stay third on 12 points from a possible 15, but now level with second-placed Sticker who were beaten 1-0 at Camelford.
Riddle felt his side backed up their midweek performance, saying: “It was good to follow up the Camelford result with another positive result, especially with a few absent. We challenged the boys to be hard to play against again and be positive that we’d create chances, and we did that.”
He added: “I was also really pleased for Alex to get his first hat-trick at Step Six. When he skied his one-on-one it seemed if it wasn’t to be, but he found himself in the right place at the right time. But to get two clean sheets with eight goals scored, it’s been a really good response from the lads after our defeat at Falmouth (Town Reserves).”
