Hayle Community Set to Honour Rick Rescorla on 9/11

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York. Hayle Town Council will honour Rick Rescorla, one of Cornwall's own who died saving thousands of people's lives.

Rick Rescorla was born in Hayle in 1939. On September 11, 2001, he coordinated the evacuation of more than 2,500 people from the World Trade Centre, saving their lives but losing his own in the process.

On September 11 of this year, all are welcome to attend the memorial event for Rick Rescorla in Hayle. The procession will start from Penpol School at 1pm, making its way to the Rick Rescorla Memorial on Penpol Terrace for a memorial service at 1.30pm.

Perran Moon, MP for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle, has shared a letter on his Facebook page from the Ministry of Defence. The letter states that the British Army will support the commemorative event, and the Parachute Regiment has welcomed the opportunity to attend.

Mr Moon hopes that a US Army representative will be able to attend. He said: "I have still not lost hope that we will have a US Army representation in Hayle on September 11 to commemorate Rick Rescorla. I will continue making representations at as high a level as I possibly can."

A spokesperson for Hayle Town Council said: "All are welcome to attend the parade and ceremony to remember his life, bravery, and sacrifice – we encourage attendees to walk or use public transport as far as possible as parking is limited and road closures will be in place for the duration."

More information can be found on the Hayle Town Council Facebook page.
