Two Arrested After Man, 81, Dies at Devon Home on Christmas Day

Two people from South Devon have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of an 81-year-old man on Christmas Day.

Devon and Cornwall Police were called at 10.50am to a rural property north of Chudleigh on December 25, 2025, following concerns for a man. It was believed a fire had occurred at the property.

A man was found inside and confirmed dead at the scene. He was later identified as Godfrey Bradford, 81, a local man.

Detectives treated his death as unexplained and continued their investigation. Three arrests were made yesterday (Tuesday).

An 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of murder. A woman in her 50s was arrested on suspicion of intentionally encouraging/assisting the commission of murder.

Police said all three are from South Devon and have been released on police bail.

DI Chris Lithgow from the Major Crime Investigation Team said: “Our officers have carried out three arrests as part of our enquiries into the death of Godfrey Bradford near Chudleigh on Christmas Day last year.

“The arrests follow months of investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr Bradford’s death.

“We would like to remind the public not to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation.”
