Firefighters Warn Again After Hot Barbecue Thrown in Croyde Beach Bin

Firefighters in North Devon have repeated their warnings about the dangers of disposable barbecues after one was thrown into a bin while still hot.

Crews from Braunton Fire Station were called to Croyde Beach on Saturday, August 15, after a disposable barbecue was placed in a bin while still hot. A spokesperson for the fire station said that, fortunately, a passerby witnessed the incident and managed to extinguish it with water and sand before the firefighters arrived.

They said: "It could very easily have been a different story. After everything that’s been shared over the last few days about the extreme fire risk, we really need everyone to stop and think.

"It’s hot, it’s incredibly dry and emergency services are already busy. Something as simple as a hot BBQ thrown into a bin can quickly become another completely avoidable emergency.

"Please think about what you’re doing and help us keep our communities, countryside and emergency crews safe."

The fire station also posted a picture from the major fire at Baggy Point in 2022 as a "stark reminder of just how much damage a disposable BBQ can cause when things go wrong".
