Perrans Above!
Newquay Island taken from above

While lockdown has found many people struggling to scratch a living, it has also provided a catalyst for some to get new businesses off the ground. So it was with Jamie Turnbull, of Perranporthwhose digital marketing company saw much of its clientele disappear overnight as budgets dried up.

In search of an alternative income, Jamie turned to his hobby of aerial photography, and created online gallery Perrans Above. These images capture Cornwall’s artistic heritage from a novel viewpoint, namely from above. Many were taken using drones - or, as Jamie prefers to call them, “flying cameras

The Perrans Above patch stretches west from St Agnes and Perranporth, all the way past St Michael’s Mount and Land’s End to the Isles of Scilly. Subject headings include boats, engine houses, harbours, historical sites and lighthouses. There are panoramas aplenty, and images are available to purchase mounted, framed and even in poster formA print can make a stunning centrepiece in your own living room, or a gift for a loved one.

“I’d been doing aerial photography for a couple of years and had built up a gallery for myself,” Jamie explains. “Then I added a couple of friends. There are six of us on there now, and I’m working with three more, with new collections planned.”

Gareth Tibbs is based on Scilly, where he runs a design business and commercial drone company; Duncan Scobie in Penzance is a trained professional drone pilot, while Brendan FitzGerald’s specialisms include property portraiture and underwater photography.

What is the art of good drone photography? “Good piloting skills, and imagination,” says Jamie. “And planning - I spend a lot of time looking at Google maps and working out the details: where and when sunrise and sunset will take place, for example, and where to take off and land legally.”

Photographers are also available for commissions across Cornwall. Aerial photographs of your home can show how it fits into the surrounding landscape in new and surprising ways. An aerial family portrait can be a fun way to mark special memories.
