Hurling board is unveiled at St Columb
The hurling board is unveiled in St Columb Major

A NEW hurling board was unveiled in the foyer of St Columb Major Town Hall before the traditional ancient game of hurling took place on Shrove Tuesday.

The honours were performed by Mayor Cllr Paul Wills and Mrs Bill Glanville, president of St Columb Old Cornwall Society.

The previous board, which was installed by St Columb Old Cornwall Society to mark the new millennium, became full following last year’s games and contains the names of the winners from 1900 to 2019, a total of 238 local people who etched their name in St Columb history.

The town council instructed town handyperson Tomasz Dalgiewicz to make a new board as part of his work programme.

When the society heard that the new board was being made they asked the council if they could pay for it, as they had done 20 years previously.

Mayor Wills commented at the unveiling: “This board will out last us all. It is capable of holding a hundred years of winners’ names.

"I thank St Columb Old Cornwall Society who paid for the materials and, of course, Tomasz who once again has done an outstanding job creating this board. “The big question is, of course, whose name will be the first to appear as the Shrove Tuesday winner of 2020.”

Mrs Glanville said: “It was an honour for the society to be able to be a part of the parish’s history.”

A little time later, after a hard fought Shrove Tuesday hurl, the Mayor’s question was answered ... the first name on the new board will be the Countrymen’s Ben Ellery.

The next hurl takes place on Saturday afternoon (March 7) when the second name to grace the new board will be known.
