Community event will be a knockout!
Organisers of the Newquay Community Fun Day at their launch event.

RESIDENTS are set for a knockout start to the summer thanks to local organisations joining forces to raise money for local charities and good causes.

A Newquay Community Fun Day ‘It’s a Knockout’ will be held at Newquay Sports Centre on Sunday, May 17.

Teams of up to 10 members are being invited to sign up to the It’s a Knockout competition, which was a game show first shown on the BBC back in the 1960s.

The day will see teams of dressed up in outfits taking part in various zany races while they negotiate inflatables, which promises to be full of mad moments, belly laughs and nostalgia.

A junior It’s a Knockout will also be held. There will be much for the families and spectators to get involved with on the day away from the It’s a Knockout competition in the main arena.

Various fun for the family is being organised, including bouncy castles, Olympic-related sports and activities, a climbing wall challenge, coconut shy and splat the rat. There will be plenty of refreshments too, from candy floss to ice creams, a barbecue, an outdoor bar and live music.

The Rotary Club of Newquay is staging the fundraiser with the support of Newquay Lions, Newquay Surf Life Saving Club, Newquay AFC Youth, Hutton Hire, Newquay Sports Bar, Newquay Sports Centre Newquay Tretherras academy.

The fun day was launched at Newquay Sports Centre on Thursday.

President of the Rotary Club, Chris Cox, said: “It’s a day for Newquay and an opportunity to raise much- needed funds for the local charities and good causes in the Newquay area.

“The It’s a Knockout games will be run in a controlled environment with the watching audience cheering them on. In the morning the games will be dry but expect to get wet in the afternoon. The games are designed so most abilities can enjoy them. “The event could be described as a ‘school sports day for adults’, ideal for a bunch of friends or a team- building exercise for companies wishing to join in.

"Everyone in every team will be given the opportunity to take part in the games if they want to and no one will be forced to participate. The emphasis is to enjoy yourselves.

“We are thrilled to have so much support from our friends in some of the other local organisations, making it a truly community-led event. It’s a first for us and if it’s successful it could be the first of many.

“Our thanks go out to our Headline Gold Sponsors Hendra Holiday Park along with Start & Co estate agents, our Silver Sponsors St Austell Brewery and Bookers Wholesale and our Bronze Sponsors The Atlantic Hotel, Lantallic Construction, Eshcol Nursing Home and Parda Decors.

"So sign up to compete at virgin or just come along and support – it will be a great day out.”

Sue Butler, the president of Newquay Surf Life Saving Club, said: “We are hoping the fun day will be a great event for the whole community to come and support. That’s what we need. There will be lots of different activities for all age groups.”

David Evison, the president of Newquay Lions, said: “It is great for Newquay Lions to be involved. Hopefully lots of teams will take part, lots of money raised for local charities and that it will be a good day for the Newquay community to get together.”
