DIGNITARIES and residents gathered in St Columb Major Church during the town’s
Carnival Week to witness the annual civic service.

The service was conducted by the Rev Helen Baber and saw this year’s elected Mayor, Councillor Paul Wills, take the oath of office for the coming civic year.

Unfortunately deputy mayor Jenny Warner was unable to attend due to illness.

Mayors from across Cornwall attended, including Newquay Mayor Andy Hannan and his wife Barbara, who is also chairman of Newquay in Bloom.

Representatives from local community groups such as Norman Bailey, president of St Columb Rotary Club, also attended, as well as the chairman of Cornwall Council, Councillor Mary May,
representatives from RAF St Mawgan and the High Sheriff of Cornwall, P Young-Jamieson.

The congregation was blessed by Rev Baber, witnessed the oath of office and sang a number of hymns before finishing with Trelawney followed by the National Anthem.

Mayor Paul Wills said: “It was a wonderful civic service with dignitaries from all over Cornwall attending. “We were delighted to welcome the Vice Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff of Cornwall, the chairman of Cornwall Council, the Acting Station Commander at RAF St Mawgan and 14 mayors and deputy mayors from the length and breadth of the county.

“It was one of the best attended civic services in years. I would like to thank the Rev Helen Baber, our church wardens and all who attended, as well as the committee of the Columba Centre for allowing us to use the hall.”
