In July 2012 a local Newquay family received news that changed their world overnight. Theresa Thomson, mum of Dylan, Summer and Joel was diagnosed with stage four Lymphoma. The family decided that Theresa should head back to Vancouver, British Columbia, to receive treatment and be with her Canadian family as she went through multiple rounds of chemotherapy.
Theresa’s partner Chris Thomson was at the time the founder of Errant Surf, a leading surf school and surf holiday operation based at the Trebarwith Hotel in Newquay. Putting family first, he sold Errant Surf to focus on raising the three children and supporting Theresa during her treatment in Canada.
As the months passed and with each successful chemotherapy round, Theresa finally beat cancer. Chris has set about creating a new business, taking all the element’s he had enjoyed running Errant Surf - specifically digital marketing - and created Marwick Marketing at the end of 2012.
Marwick Marketing would soon become a leading digital marketing agency in Western Canada, helping other businesses succeed online. Marwick Marketing has won multiple awards, was listed as the 11th Fastest Growing Company in British Columbia in 2020 (out of 500,000 companies), featured in Forbes magazine, ranked in the top 3% of Premier Google Partner Agencies globally and Chris was nominated as Vancouver’s top 40 under 40 business professionals.
In Spring 2020, Chris bought in Angie Dosnajh, formerly the marketing manager for the Business Development Bank of Canada, as a business partner and CMO.
This strategic move allowed Chris, Theresa and the family to move back to Cornwall and open a second office for the digital marketing agency.
Living an almost parallel life, Newquay local Zoey Cotton lived in Whistler, British Columbia, during the same period. Zoey took this opportunity to move back home as well, and she now leads the UK side of Marwick Marketing.
Since moving back to Cornwall, Marwick Marketing has already secured some local clients and helped increase their national and international export.
One of its most notable projects is with The Cornish Bakery, helping increase the presence of its Pasty-by-Post campaign. Many food and drink companies started to offer delivery services during the pandemic, but Marwick Marketing helped The Cornish Bakery grow its organic website traffic by 51%.
Bonds the Jewellers, a husband- and wife-ran business in Bodmin, has found similar success with the agency. As a relatively small high-street jewellery store, Bonds may not seem like an international exporter – but its owners are ambitious entrepreneurs. Working with Marwick, Bonds managed to secure a top position on Google, raising its presence to international customers. Marwick also managed to reduce the company’s pay-per-click costs for Google Ads by 45%. Now, most of the company’s online purchases are shipped out to locations across Europe and the US.
Chris Thomson comments, “It feels amazing to be living and surfing back in beautiful Cornwall and to be able to operate our marketing agency across two continents. We have deep local business knowledge, with international experience. It’s a great combination as a marketing partner for other businesses.”
Zoey Cotton comments, “Watching Marwick grow from strength to strength in Canada and then joining the team with the move to the UK has been an amazing opportunity. Our expertise in Cornwall fits well with the growth the county has seen over the past few years. We are excited to support local businesses with their digital marketing needs.”
Marwick Marketing provides Search Engine Optimisation, Google Ads, Social Media management and advertising, Website Design and Development, Conversion Rate Optimisation, ChatBot builds, and a full suite of services to help businesses of all sizes increase their market share online, boost their revenue and increase their profit.
