According to vice-president Rafael Yuste, Barcelona has communicated with Lionel Messi about the possibility of him returning to the club.
The Argentine forward, who was 35 years old at the time of his departure from the Nou Camp in 2021, holds the record as Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer with 672 goals scored in 778 games played for the club.
This summer marks the end of his two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain, and it is believed that the French club would be his first choice if he were to continue playing for them.
Barca has not been coy about their want to re-sign the World Cup winner, and during a news conference on Friday, Yuste revealed that the club has communicated with Messi’s representatives.
“Leo and his family know the affection I have for them,” Yuste said. “I participated in the negotiations which unfortunately did not lead to a certain result. I’ve always had and I have this thorn in my side that Leo couldn’t continue at our club. Messi knows how much we appreciate him. I would love for him to come back. We’re in contact, of course, with them.”
Why Did Messi Leave Barcelona?
Although Messi reached a new agreement with Barcelona in which his salary would be decreased two years ago; the agreement was contingent on the club selling players in accordance with new financial guidelines.
This did not occur in time, so his legendary run at the club ended. During his time there, he won four Champions Leagues, ten La Liga crowns, and six Ballon d’Or awards.
Messi, who won the World Cup with Argentina in December, has scored 29 goals in 66 games for PSG.
