Cornwall and beyond took part and Falmouth A were the eventual winners with Charlestown A and Caradon A coming second and third. Newquay came sixth in the final behind Mounts Bay and Roseland in fourth and fifth places.
The crew from Newquay was made up of Carol Bowes, Jenna Paul, Kelly Broderick, Debbie Blight, Eve Rogers and Sarah Higgins with cox Paul Taylor steering them safely through the course. The ladies C crew came 25th - again a marvellous achievement out of 93 starters.
The juniors (U16s) saw 25 crews take to the water and Cadgwith won with Devoran, Helford, Looe, Coverack and Rock also taking part in the final.
Newquay’s A junior Crew came 11th and this was a great result for the youngsters who had only come together as rowers earlier this year. The B crew were in 16th spot and the C crew were 21st. That C crew though was the same crew which won the U14s championships recently at Hayle and so they were rowing two years below many of their rivals in terms of age - the future certainly looks bright!
Commodore Jamie Miller CBE (RN) presented the ladies trophies with his normal unique and unmistakable banter and wit whilst Lt Col Philip Hills, who is the Cornwall Heritage Trust’s property officer, presented the junior crews with their awards - this year, all six finals trophies having been sponsored by the Trust.
In two weekends time - Sat 18-19 September, it’s the turn of the men as the crews take to the water at Newquay in their county championships.
The guys will have a definitive incentive to reach the final stages this year as it has been confirmed that Olympic medalist swimmer Sharron Davies MBE will be presenting the prizes.
