Fighting performance

Newquay v Truro                             Cornwall Cricket Premier Division                                Report by Dave Eggins

On Saturday at Boscawen Park a much more disciplined and determined Newquay side pushed high flying Truro al the way and the players can consider themselves rather unlucky not to have come out the game with a victory.

Being asked to bat after losing the toss, Newquay with the help of another magnificent innings by Corey Harris reached 197 and then proceeded to reduce Truro to 154-8 before a  9th wicket stand of 46 took Truro home.
With Harris once more in dominant mode, the other batsmen chipped in and Newquay looked a competent team able to hold their own in the premier league.

Harris’s innings was outstanding and was the lynchpin around which the team score was built. Martin Hocking contributed 20 and Josh Busby 18 and there were several other scores of double figures giving the score card a much healthier appearance.
For Truro, County captain and top all rounder Tom Sharp was the stand out bowler taking 5 for 50 in his 16 overs.

When a team is low on confidence, the luck does seem to go against it and that indeed seemed the case when Price was dropped in the slips in the first over, a much needed fillip gone begging.
Again to give credit, fiery Hussain and Spall did keep Truro in check and indeed removed the opening batsmen as reward for their efforts.
Once more, however, it was the introduction of Martin Pearce that turned the key and Truro entered a Newquay style collapse zone as they went from 111 for 2 to 154 for 8.

Willett took a stunning catch behind off Josh Busby to capture the prized scalp of Sharp and there were nervous faces in the Truro dressing room as wickets tumbled at the other end to Pearce.
Van Rooyen and Chadwick saved the day for Truro with a fine partnership under great pressure, but all told after the less than commendable attitude of recent weeks this was a performance befitting a premier league team. Truro 20 pts Newquay 7.

Newquay 197 -10 53.4 overs C Harris 93, M Hocking 20, J Busby 18, M Pearce 10, T Eggins 10. Sharp 5 -50, v Rooyen 2-40, Chadwick 2-42, Fairman 1-35.
Truro 200-8 Sharp 54, Price 43, van Rooyen 26 no, Marrion 23, Chadwick 21 no. Pearce 5-48,  Busby 1-31, Spall 1-41, Hussain 1-52
Next league fixture is home to Paul to on Saturday.

Luckett v Newquay 3rdXI

Owing to unprecedented non-availability of players, Newquay 4th team had to concede their fixture with St Stephen and amalgamate forces with the remaining available 3rd teamers for the away trip to Luckett.
There is strength in depth, ability-wise, that does exist in the club but the problem is summer conflicts like weddings, work, golf and increasingly football.

With this in mind - usual fourth team players Aaron Hawken and Daniel Ball scored well against a strong Luckett attack and showed great promise for the future as Newquay reached 165 against a strong attack.
In reply Luckett comfortably reached their total as Newquay’s young attack toiled against mature and experienced cricketers.

Thanks go to the players who did travel and a wake up call to the players that if we want to have four teams next year then the commitment to the club from the missing bodies will have to be raised a notch or two….
Newquay 165-10 46.4 overs. Tinson 44 no, Hawken 35, D Ball 30, Pinnock 22. Parker 3-41, R Brown 2-52, Southcott 2-23, S Brown 1-38. Luckett 170-3. 29.3 overs. Southcott 57 no, R Gold 42, Williams 31, R Brown 25. Cass 1-46, Hawken 1-33, Roberts 1-45.
