raise funds to buy prosthetic limbs for little Marshall Janson. Marshall, now two-years-old, had both his hands and both his legs amputated following an attack of meningitis, four days after his first birthday.
The Appeal is trying to raise £850,000-£950,000 over the next 16 years.
Gerry Reilly, co-ordinator of the Handstand Appeal said “We are thrilled, very honoured, and extremely grateful to the organisers for allowing us this accolade.
“The Newquay Surf Sevens is the final event in this year’s National Sevens Series. It is a huge and extremely prestigious event and will be covered on Sky television, so it is a massive compliment to be representing Cornwall.”
Tournament Director Andy Hawken commented, “We are delighted to welcome the Handstand Harlequins to the event. They are a proven Sevens team and are worth a place in the National Series. I think that their local players will benefit greatly from playing against some of the best Sevens players in Europe.”
As well as participating in the National Sevens Series tournament on Saturday July 17, the Handstand Harlequins will field a second team in the President’s Cup on Sunday July 18.
The Handstand Appeal will also be the event’s “charity of choice”. The Handstand teams will wear special shirts manufactured by Raging Bull, the clothing company owned by Cornwall rugby legend Phil Vickery.
Handstand shirts will be available at the event from Lovell Rugby, who are principle sponsors of the Surf Sevens, and can already be ordered at www.lovellrugby.co.uk. All profits from the sale of the shirts will go to the appeal.
