by 173 runs.
A dropped catch off Hussain in the third over set the tone after Newquay had been asked to bowl on a dry wicket and from then on fielding errors abounded and players were sluggish and quick to criticise.
Grampound Road made steady progress on reaching 128 for 4 off 38 with Newquay still in with a shout, but then an explosive partnership of 137 between Chris Hunkin and Martin Roberts in 15 overs took the game beyond Newquay. Hunkin made a superb 109, yet another county player, along with Dan Davies and Dave Roberts to have found rich pickings at the expense of Newquay, and M Roberts was 63 at the end, his third successive undefeated 50.
Newquay’s bowlers toiled in the heat and body language and comments told a tale as Grampound Road finished on 276 for 5.
Newquay, from the outset, were under pressure from the pace of Hunkin, who had a fine all round match, Sanders and Chris Roberts and only Crane, Harris and Hussain offered much by way of resistance. The spin twins of new import Vandersay and Rowse bowled the last 10 overs of the innings, conceded 11 runs and took 5 wickets as Newquay limped past the 100 mark to at least gain a batting bonus point.
Taking nothing away from Grampound Road who themselves have improved immeasurably in recent weeks strengthened by the return of M Roberts and arrival of talented youngster from Sri Lanka, Vandersay, Newquay were awful and much of their own improvement seemed to have been cast aside. The only consolation on a largely forgettable day albeit somewhat overshadowed by tragedy elsewhere was that Penzance gained fewer bonus points than Newquay in their own heavy defeat at the hands of St Just.
Thanks to the Brook House Inn for sponsoring the match ball.
On Sunday, Newquay Sports Centre was the setting as Newquay CC played host to the County U17 50 over cup fixture against Wiltshire. The weather was perfect and the Cornish youngsters, who included Newquay’s Tom Eggins in their ranks, romped home by 7 wickets, chasing a total of 168. Tom himself took 2 key wickets and generally had a good game.
Newquay’s next home fixture is against Truro on Saturday July 3 with a Cornwall CCL 20/20 Cup fixture away at Roche on Sunday 4.
The Hawkey Cup finals day has now been confirmed as taking place at St Austell on Sunday 11th July, Newquay will play Callington at 10.30 in the first of the semi finals with the final due to start at 4pm.
