Phil leaves swimming club

NEWQUAY Cormorants’ association with their swimming coach for the past ten years, Phil Goldman, is to come to an end in just a few weeks time after his request to withdraw a letter of resignation he penned was rejected.

Goldman has built an impressive history of success by developing swimmers in a variety of special categories in the paralympic swimming competitions, including multi-world-record breaking athlete Jon Fox, and fellow paralympian, Matt Whorwood, as well as British champion Ben Proctor.

Chairman of Newquay Cormorants, Ron Fullwood, said: “Phil gave us notice that he intended to resign three months ago and we understood he was planning to then go abroad to help coach underprivileged children.

“Before our AGM last week I and others spoke

Peppermints sign new first team manager

THE Peppermints have a new first team manager after their new director of football, Trevor Mewton, presented the proposal to the board of the club on Sunday evening and received its   approval for the appointment.

Newquay's hopes are dashed

Any hopes of Newquay having a chance of building on last week’s positives were dashed on Saturday at Grampound Road by a thick covering of drizzle coming up from the west of the county.

On a thoroughly miserable afternoon, play did eventually start at 3.45pm with a 25 over per side bash and Grampound Road came out victors by 52 runs.

Newquay took the field and after taking a couple of quick early wickets were soon put to the sword by an impressive partnership of 120 between South and Hughes.

When Jon Hancock came on towards the end and took two wickets, in a fine spell of bowling on his return to first team action, the damage had already been done and the Road made 157 for 4 off their 25 overs. Three very expensive overs in the middle of the innings

Under 11s up for the cup!

Kernow League U11 Cup Final
Newquay U11 3 - 0 Truro U11
NEWQUAY’S U11 footballers were out to impress at Sunday’s Kernow League Finals at Hayle – and walked away with the silverware for their valiant efforts.

After collecting an impressive array of four runners- up medals, Newquay approached this cup final game with a steely determination and a thirst for victory.

It soon became apparent that it would be this steely determination which would prove to be the difference between the sides.

After a first half in which Newquay didn’t manage to get into their usual passing rhythm, they still managed to fashion numerous opportunities, utilising the pace of diminutive front man Adam Bicknell who worried the Truro rearguard and tested the opposition ‘keeper,  forcing a number of corners.

It was Bicknell who forced both of Newquay’s first half goals, from possibly the unlikeliest of places.

Adam has excelled from set plays and it was his deadly delivery

Godolphin on top in local derby

Jim Hilton bowed out as Newquay Manager as Godolphin gained revenge for the 2-1 Good Friday defeat.

Newquay were again forced into changes, Robertson and Hartigan returning the starting XI, whilst goalkeeping coach Dave Wilton was signed on emergency forms earlier that morning.

Godolphin were pretty much at full strength, Paxton made his return to the starting line up, Lowry was on the bench.

As with the Good Friday encounter at Mount Wise, both sides started tentatively until Luke Rigby ran directly through the heart of the Godolphin midfield, evaded three challenges before firing goalwards, Semmens did well to stop with his legs. The Peppermints were making inroads, Hartigan being the main source of danger on the left wing, several crosses had Semmens in a fluster but neither Palmer or Middleton were able to capitalise. Both sides had attempts saved, but neither 'keeper was really troubled.

Despite playing down the hill with the wind at their backs, Godolphin

And it's goodbye from Jim!

THE news which many connected with Newquay Football Club had known, or at least suspected for some time, was confirmed in the cauldron of excitement which was Mount Wise on Good Friday as Newquay and Godolphin did battle - Jim Hilton anounced he was standing down as first team manager.

It was a day of mixed emotions for the popular local man who has given the vast proportion of his time outside the 'day job' at solicitors Ralph and Co to the development and promotion of football across the town and across age groups from seven years upwards for well over ten years.

Speaking about his thoughts on standing down, and the match in which his Newquay side had come back from a goal down to win against their local rivals 'The G', Hilton said "I suppose I'm probably feeling a litle bit sad on reflection now I've announced the decision to finish as first team coach, but it is the right thing to do.

"After three or four years in charge I feel that now is the time when the players need

All square at the top

Honours were even at Trefrew Park as second place Camelford hosted Godolphin who took top spot in the league after a 2-1 win at Perranporth the Tuesday previously.

After a fairly open start to the game, Shaun Semmens’ long clearance was not dealt with by the Camelford defence and Godolphin were fortunate to open the scoring when the ball struck Lee Paxton and fell into the path of Phil Lowry who bundled the ball home with the Camelford ‘keeper stranded.

But, within a matter of minutes Camelford were level after Godolphin failed to clear. With the loose ball bouncing in the box, shouts for handball were ignored by referee Knowles as Camelford struck level from six yards.

Camelford put further pressure on the Godolphin defence and edged ahead on the 20-minute mark when Marc Gusterson ended a fine move with a clinical finish.

Godolphin rallied and Paxton looked like a continued threat with Camelford struggling

Godolphin go into joint second

The Godolphin faithful travelled in numbers to see The G register their sixth consecutive league victory and climb to joint second spot in the SWP League Division 1 West, their highest position since joining the league three seasons ago and a significant eight points clear of local rivals Newquay.

The first half of the match wasn’t pleasing on the eye with the home side content to pump long balls forward at every opportunity but only ever looking dangerous from set pieces. Godolphin for their part competed well on a tight pitch which suited the physical style of Holsworthy.

In a half of few chances it was Godolphin who took the lead on 40 minutes when Tom Shephard played the ball forward and, following a misplaced clearance, Micky Thompon released Phil Lowry who raced clear of the defence before thumping the ball past the advancing keeper from 15 yards.

After the break it was a similar story with the G looking to pass the ball prompted largely by the quality of Ross Fallons in midfield, whilst the home side continued to play very direct.

Godolphin's strong rear-guard was breached though on 65 minutes when a perfectly

Cross country stars triumph

TRETHERRAS Junior Girls Cross Country Team have returned home after a famous victory in the English Schools Cross Country Cup but the journey was not without its problems!

The team of Georgia Timson, Abby Cayton Smith, Emma Morley, Annie Trotter, Lowenna Hawkey and Maia Garner found getting all the way to Northumberland to compete with 22 other teams for the title of English Schools Cross Country team relatively straightforward.

In fact, compered to the journey they then had to take back to Cornwall even the racing itself seemed like a doddle!

A train journey which should have seen them get back on Saturday evening at around midnight ended up with cancelled locos seeing the team of

Godolphin to be top guns?

Classy Godolphin had too much for Mousehole as they comfortably notched their twentieth win of the season at Trungle Park, a win which sees them climb above local rivals Newquay as they continue to close the gap on the league’s leading pack.

The G were on the front foot in the early exchanges and almost scored inside five minutes when Kyle Brown penetrated to the byline and pulled the ball back to Phil Lowry whose first time shot was deflected wide.

Their total  early supremacy paid off on 12 minutes when Ross Fallons fed Brown in a crowded penalty area and the G skipper flicked the ball forward in the air before rifling a superb volley into the top corner of the net from 15 yards.

Lowry went close to doubleing the advantage on 25 minutes when he latched onto Lee Paxton’s pass, only to see his shot from the edge of the area shave the foot of the
