Town sides grab goals and points

GODOLPHIN got their season off to a flying start with a stunning display at Gala Park where Dave Moore stole the show when he struck four times in the opening 45 minutes of this ruthless exhibition of passing football from the young G outfit.

The season was barely ten minutes old when Godolphin struck the first blow. Ross Fallons’ free kick from the left was headed clear of the penalty area where Dave Moore was lurking inside the ‘D’  from where he unleashed a thunderous left foot volley into the corner of the net.

The home side hit back soon after when Ross Fallons had his pocket picked in the midfield area and Jamie Thompson’s tame effort was deflected past the wrong-footed keeper Sean Semmens and over the line.

Godolphin kept up a good tempo with some crisp incisive passing football and Josh Harris combined nicely with Kyle Brown who shot wide before Jamie Wigg released Harris to cut in from the left, but the lively youngster fired over the crossbar.

Godolphin pressure was rewarded when Harris again broke down the left and this time his shot beat the keeper and was forced over the line by Moore with defenders

Cricket legend in town

Newquay Cricket Club welcomed Indian batting legend Dilip Vengsarkar to their ground on Friday to meet club members and mayor Andy Hannan plus local businessmen and formally open the improved facilities.

Vengsarkar played in 116 tests and 129 One Day Internationals for India, scoring over 10,000 international runs.  He played during an era in which fast bowling had never been so strong or so intimidating, but scored runs against all attacks, including Lillee and Thomson, Willis and Botham and the formidable West Indian quartet of quickies.

An elegant stroke-maker, Vengsarkar could also be a tormentor of even the strongest attacks.  He was India's number three for many years and from that pivotal position guided the fortunes of the country's batting in a 16-year international career during which India became world champions.

During the late 80s he was arguably the finest batsman in the world, scoring eight centuries in 16 test matches and in 1987 was voted one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year and to this day is the only player from another international team to score three consecutive hundreds at Lord’s.

Mr Vengsarkar was introduced to the Club by his friend, Vasant

New-look squad get outing

THE Peppermints’ pre-season preparations continued at Mount Wise stadium on Saturday, manager Glynn Hooper giving his squad a real test as visitors Hengrove Athletic play two leagues above Newquay in the national football pyramid.

A crowd in excess of 100 turned out on a glorious sunny afternoon too see how far things have come since the club signed several new players. Those that came expecting to watch a completely new side actually set eyes on some familiar faces – Middleton, Hampshire, Robertson, Carne, Hilton, Rigby and others all playing a part in proceedings.

It was always Hooper’s plan to integrate new signings into the original squad and the club have retained the local heart of the side.

On the pitch, Newquay used 20 plus players in a rolling substitution system, allowing most of the squad a good run out against quality opposition.

While Peppermints supporters would have been pleased with the performances of Blackner in goal, Harris, Rawlins, Reski and Westgarth, it was one of the Newquay old guard

New blood at Mount Wise

Newquay AFC supporters have been eagerly awaiting the start of proceedings at Mount Wise after an eventful summer.

The arrival of Glynn Hooper as manager has certainly given a lift to the Peppermints. He has brought in several new players to add to the squad as the club look to finally make the step up to the SWPL Premier Division.

Glynn has stated that promotion is the aim this season, which will be music to the ears of the long suffering Newquay supporters.

A practice game at Sticker saw some new signings play alongside more recognisable stalwarts and a plethora of promising youngsters. New signing Mamsy Sabo scored the Peppermints’ only goal in a 1-1 draw, a game that saw 27 different players used.

Club supporters will have the chance to see how far things have progressed

Swimmer Fox breaks world record

Paralympian Jonathan Fox of Newquay Cormorants Swimming Club  broke his world 100m backstroke record in the heats at the British Championships on his way to winning the event.

Fox, who has cerebral palsy, set a new S7 category mark of one minute 10.70 seconds in Manchester, beating his old record of 1:11.94 set last year. But he missed out on a second world record in the final, clocking 1:11.36.

“I’ve been working hard over the past three months so I wanted to see what I was like in a race,” he said.

“I’ve been working hard on the back end of my races in training and it has all paid off – I didn’t think I was going that fast.”

Fox, who won gold at last year’s World Championships in Eindhoven in his previous best time, moved from Cornwall to work with coach Mick Massey at the Manchester

Gigs battle it out on high seas

SUNDAY saw yet another year of charity rowing as seven volunteer crews of three plus a cox, aided by three experienced rowers from Newquay Rowing Club, took to the water to compete for the Children’s Hospice South West trophy.

It was a great afternoon in terms of weather, fun, leg-pulling, fine food and refreshment put on by Newquay Rowing Club and everyone there - rowers and spectators alike were able to look out across Newquay Bay and think “would we really want to be anywhere else?”

The mile-long straight rowing course is a simple training run for those experienced in gig rowing but, of course, for those who have never been in gigs before (as was the case with most of the teams which took part), the distance was a genuine challenge. Bear in mind that they all had to row a mile to get out to the start line too so it really was no mean feat for them.

But the fact that each crew had with them three experienced rowing club members made things somewhat easier but there was no lack of competition between those who took part.

It was great to see that crews had come from so far afield to take part and support the exceptionally worth cause of Children’s Hospice South West both through their

Stokes surfs to Irish win

NEWQUAY Surfer Alan Stokes added another win to his impressive career this weekend, and walked away with the 3,500 euro prize after winning the Quiksilver Expression Session in Bundoran, Ireland.

A rapid increase in swell late in the afternoon offered officials the perfect window to run the qualifying heats and final which saw Stokes streak away from the pack with some innovative aerial surfing to clearly take home the winner’s cheque.

“It is not a bad day’s work really,” laughed Stokes on his win. “Stoked and really happy with the win. There were great waves in the end and it was good to have it on a wedge because it is high performance surfing and it all came good.

“It is my first trip to Bundoran, I love it and it is great. Guinness and waves I can do airs on is as good as it can get for me.”
“It got so much better the last heat that it felt

Skittled out for just 56 runs

NEWQUAY’S cricketers hit another low on Saturday as they visited in-form and former champions St Just and collapsed when given the chance to build an innings to attack a lead set by the hosts.

St Just had batted first and put together a solid, but beatable, 197 runs for nine wickets off the full 55 overs.

But Newquay’s bowlers had shown spirit and would have been bouncing with delight as just the second bowl of the day saw Trevor Garwe take the wicket of St Just opener David Roberts. Garwe took three for 59 and Richard Spall took two as did Martin Pearce.

It was the Newquay batting which meant the match was going all the wrong way for the visitors though and, needing 198 to win, it was only Martin Pearce who got into double figures with 22. The next highest score by a batsman being six.  ‘Extras’ was actually the ‘second best score’ with 16!

Adam Williams of St Just took the first wicket and then veteran bowler Nick George took eight in a row from 13 overs (8 for 20).

The next game is at home for Newquay - a basement battle
