GUITAR GIFT: Popstar James Morrison

INTERNATIONAL popstar James Morrison has donated one of his guitars to help boost the funds raised at Newquay’s 10th anniversary Paddle fundraiser.

The singer/songwriter has signed, tuned in and played the Yamaha acoustic guitar, which is among the rewards on offer for the Joe Way Paddle for Life Crowdfunding initiative.

The guitar is available for a £750 pledge to the charity.

James, from Newquay, who started out his musical career busking in the town centre, has gone on to enjoy global success and has been a long-time support of the Paddle event, which has helped promote Joe’s Appeal to thousands of extra supporters over the years.

The guitar is one of many rewards up for grabs in the Crowdfunder, which also includes signed canvas prints from surfers Ben Skinner and Tom Butler, along with Team Rider T-shirts and signed posters, C-Skins wetsuits, Segway sessions and tickets to see Feeder.

Memory The Paddle is held in memory of Joe Way who was born with a rare genetic condition and died in 2008 aged four. He

was labelled a miracle boy after surviving meningitis, potentially deadly skin reaction SJS and numerous superbugs, but finally died of complete organ failure after suffering from Steven Johnson Syndrome for a second time. Since his death his parents have campaigned tirelessly to raise money for more than 20 causes in his name, raising in excess of £140,000.

Joe’s dad Matt said: “We are really excited about this year’s Crowdfunder page, which is being supported and featured by Crowdfunder, so it’s another great way to raise money for charity and get Joe’s inspiring story out there.”

The Paddle for Life 2017, in partnership with Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club and Surf Life Saving Cornwall, will be held on Thursday, June 22.

Skydive The Paddle event will get underway with a skydive onto Towan Beach at 3.30pm and the last registration for a heat is 6pm to give people plenty of time to arrive when they have finished work.

The Joe Way Memorial RNLI Lifeguard Race is due to start just after 7pm. Boards are provided with lots of help from Newquay and Lusty Glaze surf life savers so all people need to bring is their wetsuit.

Swimmers, SUPs and canoes are also welcome.

A host of music acts have been signed up to perform at the Sunset Session, including Daisy Clark, who has been making waves on the international music scene.

The 10-piece Caribbean-style steel band Steel Appeal will be making a welcome return, while Blues Brothers On The Run will be hitting the Paddle for the first time. Lively five piece rock, pop and funk party band The Ferris Wheel Junkies will be covering an eclectic range of retro and current tracks.
