delighted with the new facility.
He said: “It’s made a huge difference, the main thing being space. We now have a dedicated first aid room, storage, changing facilities and a large observational area from which we can watch the beach. As one of the busiest beaches in the country, the storage containers we were using quickly got crowded and messy and were just not nice to work from.”
The project cost the lifesaving charity £500,000, and an official opening ceremony will take place in 2011.
Paul Benney, RNLI area lifeguard manager, said he was pleased to see a facility “befitting the world famous Fistral Beach”.
He said: “The RNLI lifeguards have come a long way since they took over the lifeguard service on Fistral Beach in 2001, when they worked from metal storage containers.
“The charity’s lifeguards must provide safety cover on the beach whatever the weather and are constantly exposed to the elements.
“In stark contrast to the old facilities, the new building is a comfortable and secure place, both for the lifeguards and the people they rescue.
“Its location at the top of the beach, and access, mean they can also respond to incidents quickly and effectively."
RNLI lifeguards will continue to patrol Fistral full-time until the end of September, then at weekends throughout October and through the October school half-term.
