core town management functions – but the greater issues needing attention were deemed to be those around anti-social behaviour, underage visitors, safeguarding and so on. Unlike other departments it is just me and I can’t delegate other tasks to anyone, so some things were not able to get my attention whilst Newquay Safe work was going on. “And Newquay Safe did not just take place during the summer months – the amount of planning in the last 12 months has been tremendous.”
Mr Thomas also denied the claim that his role as town centre manager was nearing an end, saying: ”There is no truth to the rumour that I may be leaving my post as town centre manager.
“The whole of Cornwall Council is under review in terms of restructuring, and I was naturally concerned to hear the discussion about my apparent demise! If we had not responded to the issues that arose last year we would have been quite rightly criticised, and I think it is absolutely right that I have been doing it – but I can only spread myself so thin.”
He stated too that he understood the dissatisfaction of critics who have complained that it is extremely difficult to contact him.
He continued: “I understand the frustration that I have been hard to get hold of, and I will take that on board and see what measures I can put in place to make that easier.
“As discussed, I have been flat out with projects, especially with the Newquay Safe projects. I have also been working some night shifts, meaning that I have not been available during the day.”
