ASDA moving into town

withdraw a proposal for a store at Treloggan, “because of Restormel’s determination to focus on the train station and growth area as priority sites for a new foodstore.”

The new plan should therefore please town planners, as well as residents who : showed strong support for Asda’s Trellogan application.

Asda bought the land on Trevemper Road from local developer Kingsley from Fraddon, which planned to also have overseen the development of a drive-through and sit-in pizza restaurant on the brownfield site.

Speaking in 2004 Kingsley managing director Mark Simpson predicted correctly: “Restormel have no end user for the site and in two to three years we will be in the same situation."
Staff at the Co-operative food store were told they are to have a new employer on Friday, August 20.

A spokesperson for The Co-operative Group said: “The Co-operative Group can confirm it is to sell its food store on Oakleigh Terrace, Newquay, to Asda as a going concern.

“Staff at the store have been informed of the sale. All staff, eight full time and 20 part time, will automatically transfer to the new operator with their terms and conditions of employment maintained. The store will be taken over by Asda on 11 October.

“We are pleased to have concluded a deal which ensures employment for the staff, as well as a continuing service for the local community. We would like to thank our shoppers for their valued custom over the years.”

Asda faces tougher competition than in 2004, since that time the Morrisons store site has been expanded and Aldi and Tesco Express have also joined the highstreet.

A spokesperson for Asda confirmed that the company had bought the site, but details have yet to be announced, he said: “As far as I know the store will be opening as Asda in late November. There will be all the normal range of Asda produce and goods that consumers can expect in any store. There will be a selection of food, home and leisure. We are sure Asda will be well received by Newquay consumers, as we have been crowned ‘lowest priced supermarket’ for 13 years running by the Grocer Magazine.”

about time Asda were brought into Newquay , some competition for other supermarkets is not a bad thing ,, Asda is a good store , and i will no longer have to go to St Austell store , cant wait ,maybe this will be the beginning of some big named stores coming to Newquay in the future.
