Disappointment over Sun article

collapsed in her own vomit were splashed across the national press.

The Newquay Safe Partnership was set up a year ago in response to the teenage cliff deaths and views this summers national articles depicting Newquay as simply an Ibiza style party town as a kick in the teeth against all their efforts.

The most recent article in The Sun illustrates Newquay’s “pretty disturbing” nightlife with scenes of drunk young people, which arguably can be witnessed in most town centres across the country, said Newquay’s mayor.
Disappointed Rob Andrew, who project manages the Newquay Safe Partnership says that despite the few negative press he is “pleased” with the teams achievements.

“Some of the facts in the Sun article are totally inaccurate, for example the amount of alcohol seized and the journalist didn’t contact the police or council for a comment,” he said.
“I am disappointed to see an article where the journalist has failed to engage fully with the Newquay Safe Partnership and establish the context and the facts.

We will be addressing alcohol related issues in the town for the next five to ten years but I am pleased with the first year’s results.
“I think we have shown that  we are working well together, engaging with the community and spreading the message that while we want people to come to Newquay, we want them to be responsible”.

Pre-holiday warnings about the danger of under-age drinking were given at schools but the partnership admits that tackling binge drinking is “going to take government support”.
Newquay mayor Jill Bunt was also “disappointed” with the article, she said: “I have read the article and of course I am disappointed that once again the press have sought to show Newquay in a negative light. I think this needs to be put into perspective. In yesterday’s Sunday People there was a similar article about Chelmsford in Essex!

“I am quite sure that if you went out with a camera in to many towns throughout the country you would be able to get similar photos. There are not many towns, however, that have and still are taking such positive action to combat such instances of drunken behaviour.”
