Toilets reprieve in top resort

SEVERAL of Newquay’s public toilets that were earmarked for closure have been given a 12-month reprieve.

Cornwall Council has decided to fund the running of the conveniences at Pentire Headland, East Street, Beach Road, Chester Road and the railway station for another year to allow for consultation to be carried out with Newquay Town Council.

Porky fears for garage future

A long-established  Newquay mechanic and body shop operator fears he will lose his garage business after plans were submitted to build a housing estate on his garage.

Ian ‘Porky’ Morcom, who has run Auto Resprays in Tolcarne Road for 40 years, is worried his business will have to close if a planning proposal to build seven properties on the site is given the go-ahead.

Public debate into Jubilee Project

NEWQUAY Town Council is appealing to residents to have their say on whether the authority should purchase the £650,000 former bus station site.

The town council has made an offer for the eyesore site in East Street, which has been accepted, and now wants to consult the community before a potential sale goes through.

Councillors fight toilet closure threat

CONFUSION still surrounds the future of Newquay’s public toilets as town councillors call for proper consultation over the closures.

It follows a letter sent to the town council by Cornwall Council stating that its review has involved a “full assessment of running costs for each individual public convenience”.

And while some toilets have been put on the retained list, those that haven’t will no longer be funded and the recommendation is for them to close completely.

Surfer dog is internet star!

A SURFING dog from Newquay has become an internet sensation following her barking mad antics.

Two-year-old Labrador Mango has been taught to surf by owner Matt Slater who is the curator at the Blue Reef Aquarium. The pair have been hitting the waves together ever since she followed him out into the surf one day.

CORNWALL Council is looking at options to enable a proposed major housing development in Newquay to be considered for approval.

The Duchy of Cornwall’s plans to build 170 properties on fields between Tregunnel Hill and Trethellan have stalled because Cornwall councillors felt a 28% affordable housing element was insufficient.

Couple's gun attack terror

A COUPLE were subjected to a terrifying burglary at gunpoint at their Newquay home on Friday night, which left a man with serious injuries.

A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were confronted by two men and threatened with the firearm in their Mount Wise property at about 6pm. The man was assaulted by the intruders before they made off with a small amount of money and a mobile phone.

Rave reviews for film festival

GLOWING reviews have been heaped on a prestigious film festival staged in Newquay between Friday  and Sunday.

The Cornwall Film Festival was held at the Lighthouse Cinema for the first time and exceeded all expectations.

Filmgoers flocked to watch the hundreds of films, short films and features showcased at the event, which included Cornish, international and British  feature films, documentaries, retro classics, animations, Celtic language, workshops and talks.

Plans for new quay at harbour

A NEW quay is due to be built in Newquay as part of a £800,000 major harbour improvement scheme.

The Harbour Regeneration Project will establish a low water quay at the Fly Cellars to enable people to get on and off boats at low tide if an EU Fisheries grant is successful.

The fishermen’s storage areas gutted by fire two years ago will be replaced by a purpose-built Treffry Centre after a £106,000 Seaside Town Grant was awarded from Visit Cornwall and Cornwall Council.
