Plea to upgrade danger routes
NEWQUAY’S Cornwall Council representatives are joining forces in a bid to persuade the authority to improve one of the two major roads into the resort from the A30.
Councillors would like to see either the route through Summercourt or Mountjoy enhanced to reduce accidents and relieve congestion at Quintrell Downs.

Students benefit from crime proceeds
A SCHEME which sees proceeds of crime handed over to local good causes saw £500 presented to Newquay’s Treviglas Community College last week.
The generous donation was made as part of a new municipal initiative.
Money from unclaimed criminal property was donated by Devon and Cornwall Police as part of the cash back scheme intended to take profits from criminal activities and give them back to the community.
The money donated to Treviglas will be used to support students taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) and other adventure programmes.

Rail station escapes blaze disaster
THREE quick-thinking police officers saved Newquay Railway Station from burning to the ground in the early hours of New Year’s Day following an arson attack.
Inspector Ian Drummond Smith, Sergeant Regie Butler and PC Russell Speller dashed into action after a wooden shed was ignited underneath the railway canopy at about 4am in the morning.

Nightspot closed over police concerns
A NEWQUAY nightspot has been shut down after breaching its licence over several months.
The Shack in Bank Street has had its licence revoked by a Cornwall Council licensing committee following concerns about the management of the venue.
The premises was initially closed on November 27 due to worries about disorder after police conducted a licensing check.
Officers noted that the doorman was not wearing a SIA badge, the CCTV was not working properly and there was no manager in charge. There were only two 18-year-old women working behind the bar and neither were appointed managers or had any management experience at the premises.

Boyfriend on run for brave Carly
A DEDICATED boyfriend is limbering up to run seven marathons in seven days to raise money for his Crantock girlfriend who suffered a serious neck injury in a fall.
Nielson Webber – known as Nelly – is taking on the mammoth challenge to raise money to set up a fund for Carly Taylor.
Carly is currently being treated at the Salisbury Hospital Spinal Unit – she was on a night out in Truro with netball teammates when she fell and broke her neck in three places.

Rescued boat sinks in harbour
A SMALL fishing boat fell victim to yesterday’s bad weather when it sunk in Newquay Harbour.
The ‘Sweet As’, owned by Jake Gilbert, was overcome by the high tides, strong winds and heavy rain on Tuesday morning.
The boat is the smallest commercial fishing boat left in the harbour over the winter – its size makes it particularly susceptible to the risks posed by the bad weather.

Alert over drug death toll
A SUSPECTED drug death at a public toilet in Newquay has intensified talks to introduce measures to reduce fatalities.
A multi-agency group of Cornwall Council, police and the Drug and Alcohol Action Team met to discuss schemes that could be introduced at public toilets across the county following the death of a 27-year-old man from Edgcumbe Avenue in the East Street toilets on November 13.
Police will not know how he died until the outcome of an inquest, but fear it could be from a drugs overdose.

Police warning after spate of crashes
NEWQUAY police are appealing to motorists to take care on the roads after four vehicle accidents occurred in less than a week.
Newquay fire crews were called to the first accident at 5.22pm on Thursday on West Road, Quintrell Downs, which left the road closed for an hour. They were joined by the rescue tender from Bodmin and on arrival found three vehicles involved and two people trapped.
Crews used crash rescue equipment to free the casualties who were then treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.

Scared residents' lives a 'misery'
FRIGHTENED residents claim their lives are being made a misery by a woman who has moved into their sheltered housing estate in Newquay.
Residents of West Court in Crantock Street, which provides accommodation for elderly andthe disabled, say problems started soon after the woman in her thirties was transferred there three years ago.
