RESIDENTS have voiced concerns they have been left in the dark after a military project got underway in Watergate Bay.

Schools feature in league tables

NEWQUAY schools have reacted to their ratings in the Government’s GCSE performance tables released last week.

Newquay Tretherras has celebrated another record-breaking year with 64% of last year’s Year 11 achieving five or more A* - C grades including English and Mathematics. This is a 3% increase on 2010 and represents a fourth year in a row of improved results.

Treviglas Community College achieved 47% A* - C grades compared to 53% in 2010, 58% in 2009 and 54% in 2008, but came second in the whole of Cornwall...

Sharks to get teeth into Mount Wise

MOUNT WISE Stadium is to become home to the Cornish Sharks American Football club, after a landmark deal was signed this week.

The stadium, home of Newquay AFC, will be shared between the clubs, becoming the ‘Shark Tank’ throughout the American football season which runs between April and September.

The Sharks have been based at Newquay Sports Centre since their inception six years ago, and regularly play host to teams from across the UK....

Bishop joins drive to help homeless

VOLUNTEERS are being urged to come forward and help with an “emergency response” to the sub-zero temperatures facing homeless people sleeping on the streets of Newquay.

The Rev Chris McQuillen-Wright hopes that as temperatures plummet a room will be found that can temporarily be opened to allow homeless people to sleep inside.

However, volunteers are needed to sit with them and ensure their safety – the popular vicar said ideally around 24 people would come forward...

Cinema shines light on parking charges

NEWQUAY’S cinema is launching a campaign to persuade Cornwall Council to introduce concessionary evening car park charges in the town in a bid to help the night-time economy thrive.

Lighthouse Cinema owner David Williams believes businesses are losing trade because of the high rates charged by the council in Newquay’s car parks compared to other towns.
